Circumstances of Death

Prohibition Agent John Mulcahy, accompanied by State officers, was attempting to search a house suspected of containing smuggled liquor at Flushing Point, Westford, MA.  As the officers attempted to enter the house, six rifle shots were fired, seriously wounding Agent Mulcahy.  Agent Mulcahy was rushed to St. John's Hospital in Lowell, MA, but died the following day from the wounds.  A suspect, Joseph Mailbot, was arrested and later confessed to the shooting.

Agent Mulcahy joined the Prohibition Unit on August 17, 1924, with an annual salary of $1,860.
