Circumstances of Death

Prohibition Agent Richard Griffin and other agents were attempting to arrest several individuals near Gadsden, AL for Federal liquor violations.  The suspects suddenly attacked the agents and during the ensuing struggle, Agent Griffin was shot and killed. The suspects were eventually subdued, taken into custody and later prosecuted for murder.

Background

Agent Griffin joined the Prohibition Unit on August 16, 1920, with a salary of $1,500 per year.
