Joint Project Safe Neighborhoods Taskforce Members Net Felon Buying Handguns During Undercover Sting

CASTLE ROCK, COLO. — Acting Special Agent in Charge Melvin King of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Denver Field Division and Tony Lane, Chief of Police of the Castle Rock Police Department announced that Steven Allen Ford, 29, a.k.a. “Cherrio” was arrested for possession of a firearm during an undercover operation by members of the ATF Project Safe Neighborhoods Violent Crime Task Force.

On February 8th, 2010 at approximately 6:50PM, Ford, a multi-convicted felon and Castle Rock resident was arrested after purchasing two handguns, a .45 caliber pistol and a 9mm pistol from an undercover agent. Ford was arrested outside “The Busty Bullfrog Lounge” located at 971 Park Street in Castle Rock. Ford's federal arrest was a result of a joint Castle Rock Police Department, Aurora Police Department, Lakewood Police Department, and ATF investigation where information was obtained that Ford was actively attempting to illegally purchase firearms and narcotics off the streets.

The members of this joint ATF task force quickly acted on developed information and prevented a criminal from obtaining weapons that quite possibly could have been utilized in violent criminal acts, Lane said.

King said This joint investigation illustrates the strong partnerships we in Colorado are blessed to have with law enforcement agencies at the federal, state, county, and local levels.

Gun cases are investigated and prosecuted as a part of Colorado Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a coordinated initiative targeting gun and gang violence in Colorado communities. The initiative, which includes federal, state, and local law enforcement officers and prosecutors, has been active in Colorado for about 10 years.

Anyone with information regarding violent crime in the Castle Rock, Colorado area is encouraged to contact Denver Metro Crime Stoppers at (720) 913-7867 or call the ATF Denver Field Office at (303) 844-7540. Callers can remain anonymous.
