Suspect Indicted for Alleged Participation in an Armed Robbery

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Michael Johnson, Jr., 22, of Newport News, Va., was indicted by a federal grand jury today on charges related to the armed robbery of a Miller Mart in Newport News. The charges include conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, and use of a firearm in reference to a crime of violence. He faces a maximum penalty of 47 years.

According to the indictment, on June 22, 2006, Michael Johnson, Jr. caused a co-conspirator to enter the Miller Mart during the early morning hours and order ice cream. Johnson then entered the Miller Mart carrying a firearm and demanded cash, lottery tickets, and cigarettes. After the robbery, Johnson and a co-conspirator fled the scene.

This case was investigated by Newport News Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Howard Zlotnick and Special United States Attorney Kristine Wolfe are prosecuting this case on behalf of the United States.

Criminal indictments are only charges and not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed to be innocent until and unless proven guilty.
