Methamphetamine Trafficker Sentenced to More Than 11 Years in Federal Prison for Drug Conviction

Anchorage, Alaska – Acting United States Attorney Kevin F. Feldis announced that a former resident of Anchorage, Alaska, was sentenced in federal court in Anchorage to 132 months in prison for his conviction for conspiring to distribute over 50 grams of actual methamphetamine.

On May 17, 2011, Guillermo Willie Murguia, 34, was sentenced by Senior United States District Judge H. Russel Holland.

According to information presented to the court by Assistant United States Attorney Joseph Bottini, Murguia was involved in a conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine in Anchorage from approximately January to September 2010. During most of that time, Murguia, a United States citizen born and raised in Anchorage, was living in Mexico. Murguia and a co-conspirator were charged in September 2010, with distributing over 50 grams of actual methamphetamine, an amount which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years. Murguia was arrested on September 7, 2010, at San Ysidro, California as he attempted to enter the United States from Mexico.

Murguia pled guilty in January 2011. As part of a plea agreement, Murguia admitted that he had agreed to distribute at least 393 grams of actual methamphetamine in Alaska.

Prior to imposing sentence, Judge Holland noted that the amount of methamphetamine involved in the case was substantial and indicated that Murguia was responsible for drug trafficking well above the typical street level amounts.

Mr. Feldis commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigations for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Murguia.
