Alfred Man Pleads Guilty to Possessing Bombs
Portland, Maine — United States Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II announced that Robert Infante, 47, of Alfred, Maine, entered guilty pleas today in U.S. District Court in Portland to charges arising out of the seizure of bombs, drugs and firearms from his Alfred, Maine home in June 2010. Infante pleaded guilty to the following federal charges: possession of unregistered destructive devices; possession of firearms and ammunition by a convicted felon; manufacturing marijuana; and possession of a destructive device during and in relation to a drug trafficking offense. A sentencing date has not been set.
According to court records, police and fire personnel responded to Infante’s home on June 25, 2010 after Infante requested emergency services for injuries due to an explosion. When first responders arrived, they found numerous marijuana plants growing in Infante’s house along with various pipe bombs, firearms and ammunition. The evidence in the case showed that Infante possessed the bombs and other weapons for the purpose of protecting his marijuana growing operation.
Infante faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 years and as much as life in prison on the charge of possessing bombs in relation to manufacturing marijuana. He faces a mandatory consecutive term of 15 years for possessing firearms and ammunition as a convicted felon. Infante further faces a sentence of up to 40 years on the marijuana manufacturing charge and up to 10 years on the unregistered explosive charge.
U.S. Attorney Delahanty said that the investigation leading to today’s guilty plea was conducted by the Maine State Fire Marshals, the Maine State Police Bomb Squad, the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives along with the swift and professional assistance of the Alfred Fire Department.
