SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Beth Phillips, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced today that two Quincy, Mo., men and a Goodman, Mo., man have been sentenced in federal court for robberies at Dollar General stores in Seneca, Mo., and in Holden, Mo., in which they used arson fires to create a diversion.
Gary Nations, 39, of Goodman, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Richard E. Dorr to 15 years and three months in federal prison without parole and ordered to pay $137,151 in restitution. Donald Nations, 34, of Quincy, was sentenced on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011, to 13 years and one month in federal prison without parole and ordered to pay $303,420 in restitution. Edward Self, 33, of Quincy, was sentenced on Nov. 17, 2011, to 15 years and three months in federal prison without parole.
All three defendants pleaded guilty in August 2011 to robbery and to use of fire to commit a felony.
Donald Nations and Self each pleaded guilty to robbing the Dollar General store at 11 E. 10th St. in Holden on Dec. 11, 2010, after setting a fire at a vacant residence to serve as a diversion from the robbery. Self admitted that he broke a window of the vacant home, squirted lacquer thinner through the window and set the house ablaze using a cigarette lighter.
According to plea agreements, Donald Nations, his brother, Gary Nations, and Self went to the Dollar General store after setting the fire. They entered the store at about 7:35 p.m. and, after threatening the store’s employees, stole $1,068 in cash and checks from the cash register.
Gary Nations pleaded guilty to robbing the Dollar General Store at 1705 Cherokee Ave. in Seneca, Mo., on Dec. 8, 2010, after setting a fire at a vacant residence to serve as a diversion from the robbery. He and an accomplice stole $1,160 in cash from the cash register.
In addition to the specific charges to which the defendants’ pleaded guilty, their relevant conduct (for the purpose of determining the sentences) included robberies at Dollar General stores in Adrian, Mo., and in Portageville, Mo., in December 2011.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney James J. Kelleher.
