Humeston Man Charged with Illegal Manufacture of a Destructive Device

DES MOINES, IA — On December 20, 2011, Charles Crider, 44, of Humeston, Iowa, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Celeste F. Bremer and entered a not guilty plea to federal charges of unlawfully receiving and possessing an unregistered firearm and illegally manufacturing a destructive device, announced United States Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt.

Crider was charged in a criminal complaint filed by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa, and arrested without incident on December 19, 2011, by law enforcement officers with the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. According to the complaint, Crider manufactured and possessed a home made destructive device or explosive.

The charges in the complaint are only an accusation, and Mr. Crider is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

A hearing is scheduled to be held at 11:00 am on December 22, 2011, to determine if Crider should be detained in custody while charges are pending, or whether there are any combination of conditions that will assure the safety of the community and assure his appearance in future court proceedings if he is released.
