Bowen admits his methadone contributed to deaths of two Hiawatha residents

A man who sold his prescription methadone pled guilty today in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

Tim Bowen, II, age 52, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was convicted of one count of distribution of methadone following a felony drug conviction.

At the plea hearing and in a plea agreement, Bowen admitted he began selling his entire bottle of prescription methadone to various individuals in 2010. Bowen had been prescribed the methadone for an injury. Bowen admitted that on December 22, 2010, he sold a bottle containing sixty methadone pills to an individual in Hiawatha, Iowa. The purchaser and another individual died as a result of using a combination of several prescription and non-prescription drugs, including Bowen’s methadone.

Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Bowen remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. Bowen faces a possible maximum sentence of 30 years’ imprisonment, a $2,000,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and at least 6 years of supervised release following any imprisonment.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Dan Chatham and was investigated by the Hiawatha Police Department and the Ad Hoc Heroin Overdose Task Force which is comprised of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Cedar Rapids Police Department, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Task Force consisting of the DEA; the Department of Homeland Security; the Linn County Sheriff's Office; the Cedar Rapids Police Department; the Marion Police Department; the Iowa City Police Department; the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; and the Sixth Judicial District Department of Correctional Services.
