Heller's Recycling Robbers Sentenced

MADISON, WISCONSIN – John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that defendants Donnie L. Taylor-Young, 21, Madison, Wis., and Traveon Spencer, 25, Chicago, were sentenced yesterday by Chief U.S. District Judge William M. Conley to 7.5 years and 8.5 years, respectively, for committing an armed robbery of Heller's Recycling, Madison, on May 29, 2012. Taylor-Young pleaded guilty to these charges on February 21, 2013, and Spencer pleaded guilty to these charges on February 19, 2013.

The robbery was captured on video camera and shows that Spencer entered the recycling center armed with a shotgun. Spencer ordered several employees and customers to the ground, while pointing the shotgun at them. The video shows Spencer wearing a white t-shirt on his head.

A camera in the office area of the center shows Taylor-Young and an unindicted co-conspirator enter the office wearing masks. Taylor-Young was not armed, but he was carrying a plastic bag and took $81. The unindicted co-conspirator was carrying a sawed-off shotgun and he was pointing it at two female employees.

When Spencer left the center, the t-shirt fell off his head. His DNA was subsequently identified on the t-shirt and witnesses cooperated with police, telling them Spencer admitted he had robbed the recycling center. Taylor-Young was also implicated and when he was approached by law enforcement, he confessed.

The charges against these defendants were the result of an investigation conducted by the Madison Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita M. Rumbelow.
