Madison Man Sentenced to 27 Months for Drug & Gun Crimes

Madison, Wis. — John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Edlando Watson, 29, Madison, Wis., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge William M. Conley to 27 months in prison for unlawfully possessing crack cocaine with intent to distribute it, and possessing a firearm as an unlawful user of marijuana. Watson’s sentence will be followed by a three–year term of supervised release. He pleaded guilty to these charges on March 8, 2013.

On October 24, 2012, Watson was at an apartment complex in Madison and a security officer who saw him there knew there was an outstanding warrant for Watson’s arrest. The security officer contacted a Madison police officer who was also at the complex. The officer verified there was a warrant for Watson and when he tried to contact Watson, Watson fled. The security officer and the police officer chased Watson and saw him place something under a flower pot. Watson was apprehended and he had marijuana, heroin, and crack cocaine on him.

A handgun was recovered from under the flower pot and Watson admitted he had placed it there, claiming he had it for protection. Watson said he used marijuana habitually and heroin sporadically; he admitted he was going to distribute the crack cocaine.

The charges against Watson were the result of an investigation conducted by the Madison Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita M. Rumbelow.
