Rhinelander Man Sentenced for Illegal Possession of Firearm

Madison, Wis. — John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Christopher Whittaker, 29, Rhinelander, Wis., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Lynn S. Adelman to three years in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Whittaker pleaded guilty to this crime on February 13, 2013, and has remained in custody since his guilty plea.

On October 3, 2012, Whittaker was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. Specifically, the indictment charged that, between February and April 2012, Whittaker possessed a Ruger .22 caliber rifle. Because Whittaker had previously been convicted of a felony, including vehicle hijacking and child abuse, Whittaker was prohibited from possessing a firearm.

The charge against Whittaker was the result of an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie S. Pfluger.
