Waldo Man Sentenced to 2 Years for Unlawful Possession of Ammunition

Bangor, Maine: United States Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II announced that Jesse Newton, 25, of Waldo, was sentenced yesterday in U.S. District Court in Bangor, to 2 years imprisonment and 3 years of supervised release for unlawful possession of ammunition by a person convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.

According to court records, on January 5, 2012, law enforcement agents seized 10 rounds of .357 caliber, .30–30 caliber, and .270 caliber ammunition during the execution of a search warrant at Newton’s home. Newton was prohibited from possession the ammunition as a result of a 2011 conviction in Maine for domestic violence assault. Following his arrest, Newton said: "I can’t believe I’m being arrested for having ammunition in my room."

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.
