K-9 Andi is an ATF Explosives Detection Canine (EDC) assigned to the Kansas City Field Division. Her job is to find explosives, guns and ammunition. K-9 Andi started her training with the Puppy Behind Bars organization.
K-9 Andi and Special Agent Canine Handler (SACH) Alan Leah recently responded to a request for assistance by a local municipal police department to locate a discarded firearm. The incident started with a disturbance involving two groups of males in the parking lot of a fast food establishment where weapons were being displayed. Responding officers observed two males, matching the description given by the caller, leaving the area on foot. A brief foot pursuit ensued during which one of the individuals was seen with a firearm. Officers briefly lost sight of this individual, however, once apprehended, the individual did not have the firearm in his possession. ATF K-9 Andi was requested and responded. A search of the path located the firearm hidden by the fleeing individual. The firearm was hidden near an air conditioning unit in the rear yard of a residence next to a park frequented by children. The individual seen with the firearm was on state probation for a weapons-related offense, and out on bond while awaiting adjudication on a second firearms-related offense, when this incident occurred.
