Kara is trained as an Explosives Detection Canine (EDC) with special Search Enhanced Evidence (S.E.E.K) K-9 proficiencies, giving her the ability to detect more than 19,000 different explosive formulations both on and off leash. Prior to coming to ATF, K-9 Kara was in training with the Paws with a Cause and Canine Assist organizations.

Her job is to assist ATF agents and other law enforcement officers with locating explosives, firearms and ammunition related evidence. Kara can be directed to and between objects (i.e. vehicles) more than 150 yards away from her handler with verbal, hand and whistle commands. When K-9 Kara detects explosives, she is trained to sit and wait for Special Agent Canine Handler (SACH) D'Andrea's instructions.

SACH D’Andrea and K-9 Kara’s duty station is Long Island, but they cover all of New York and can be deployed anywhere in the country. K-9 Kara enjoys playing and swimming with her non-working dog big sister, Oreo.
