Meet the Special Agent in Charge
In February 2020, Timothy Jones was selected as the Special Agent in Charge of the Baltimore Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). As the Special Agent in Charge, Mr. Jones is responsible for overseeing all ATF criminal enforcement and regulatory operations in Maryland and Delaware. The Special Agents under Mr. Jones’ leadership focus investigations on violent criminal organizations, illegal use of firearms, firearms trafficking, criminal arson and explosive incidents, and more. Additionally, Industry Operations Investigators under his leadership oversee the inspection of nearly 3,200 federal firearms licensees and over 90 explosives licensees/permittees within the Baltimore Field Division area of responsibility.
Mr. Jones was appointed to his current position after serving as the Special Agent in Charge of the ATF Chicago Field Division since January 2019, where he oversaw all ATF criminal enforcement and regulatory operations in Illinois and parts of northern Indiana and southern Wisconsin. Mr. Jones was also in the Chicago Field Division as an Assistant Special in Charge and Commander of the Chicago Crime Gun Strike Force from May 2017 until taking over as the Special Agent in Charge.
Mr. Jones began his career with ATF as a Special Agent in the ATF Atlanta Field Division, working violent crime investigations with the Atlanta Police Department from 1998 to 2003. He then became a full-time member of one of ATF’s five Special Response Teams, which are comprised of highly-trained Special Agents who deploy throughout the country to assist with high-risk tactical operations and the apprehension of some of the country’s most violent criminals. Mr. Jones remained on SRT from 2003 to 2013, before becoming the Resident Agent in Charge of ATF Baltimore Field Division’s Hyattsville I Field Office from 2013 to 2016. In 2016, he became the Deputy Chief of the Special Operations Division at ATF Headquarters in Washington, D.C., and has also served as the Chief of the Force Review Branch.
Prior to joining ATF, Mr. Jones served as a local law enforcement officer with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in North Carolina. From 1994 to 1998, he was a Police Officer assigned to patrol, community police, and street crimes units. During his time in the police department, Mr. Jones was also selected as an ATF Task Force Officer in 1995, working alongside ATF Special Agents from the Charlotte Field Division.
Mr. Jones studied Political Science at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill and graduated in 1993. He is a current member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA). Throughout his career, he has been the recipient of many awards for merit, outstanding service, and investigative excellence to include the ATF Medal of Valor, ATF Hostile Action Award, and ATF Supervisory Employee of the Year Award for his work on the ATF Chicago Crime Gun Strike Force.
