Meet the Special Agent in Charge

Special Agent in Charge Robert Cekada, Baltimore Field DivisionIn June 2018, Robert Cekada was promoted to Special Agent in Charge of the Baltimore Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). As the Special Agent in Charge, Mr. Cekada is responsible for overseeing all ATF criminal enforcement and regulatory operations in Maryland and Delaware. The Special Agents under Mr. Cekada’s leadership focus investigations on violent criminal organizations, illegal use of firearms, firearms trafficking, criminal arson and explosive incidents, and more. They also lead the law enforcement effort in Maryland’s "Exile" program, which works to identify repeat violent offenders and career criminals who have been arrested for firearm-related offenses at the state level. Additionally, Industry Operations Investigators under his leadership oversee the inspection of over 3,300 federal firearms licensees and over 90 explosives licensees/permittees within the states of Maryland and Delaware.

Mr. Cekada was appointed to his current position after serving as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the ATF Philadelphia Field Division from 2017 to 2018, where he oversaw the Division’s Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC). Prior to that assignment, Mr. Cekada was the Resident Agent in Charge of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force North in the ATF Miami Field Division from late 2014 to 2017.

Mr. Cekada began his career with ATF as a Special Agent in the ATF Baltimore Field Division’s Hyattsville II Field Office, working on the Regional Area Gang Enforcement (RAGE) Task Force from 2005 to 2011. He then moved on to the ATF Tampa Field Division for another two years of service as a Special Agent. Beginning in 2013, he served at ATF Headquarters in Washington D.C. in the Office of Field Operations, first as a Special Agent Project Officer with the Firearms Operations Division’s Frontline Branch throughout 2013, and then as a Program Manager serving as a Special Assistant to Senior Leaders for the majority of 2014. From 2010 through the present, Mr. Cekada has maintained his status as a Special Agent Certified Explosives Specialist.

Prior to joining ATF, Mr. Cekada served as a local law enforcement officer with two agencies. From 1992-2000, he was a Police Officer with the New York City Police Department (NYPD), later promoted to Detective, and was assigned to the NYPD Housing Bureau and the NYPD Citywide Anti-Gang Enforcement unit (CAGE), focusing his efforts on gun violence attributed to gang activity. Mr. Cekada then joined the City of Plantation Police Department in Broward County, Florida, where he served from 2001-2005, and worked with the Patrol Division; SWAT Team; and the Vice, Intelligence, and Narcotics (VIN) Unit.

Mr. Cekada studied Criminal Justice at the John Jay College in New York City, New York. In April 2019, Mr. Cekada became a member of the National Crime Gun Intelligence (CGI) Governing Board. He is also a current member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA), ATF Association, Maryland Sheriff’s Association, Maryland Chiefs of Police Association, International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), and the New York City Police Department Honor Legion. Throughout his career, he has been the recipient of many awards for merit, outstanding service, and investigative excellence from ATF, U.S. Attorney’s Offices, FLEOA, NYPD, City of Plantation Police Department, and more.
