Welcome to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Atlanta Field Division. Our Division is responsible for ATF criminal enforcement and industry regulatory activities in the State of Georgia. Our dedicated work force is comprised of special agents, investigators, auditors, technicians and support staff.

ATF is committed to reducing violent crime in our neighborhoods. ATF’s Atlanta Field Division special agents combat firearms violence by focusing their investigative efforts on armed violent offenders, career criminals, gun traffickers and gangs. We also work in partnership with other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies throughout Georgia to accomplish this mission.

Explosives and arson enforcement is an integral part of ATF’s overall violent crime reduction strategy. ATF’s Atlanta Field Division special agents combat arson and explosives-related crimes by conducting independent investigations and by working in partnership with local and state fire investigators and police bomb squads.

ATF also has the duty of regulating the firearms and explosives industries. Our industry operations investigators work to ensure that all firearms and explosives are stored, handled and sold in a safe manner according to law.

In addition to our Field Division, the Atlanta-metro area is also home to one of ATF’s three forensic science laboratories and one of ATF’s three regional Explosives Technology Branch offices.

We encourage all residents to get involved and assist us in our goal of reducing crime in our communities. Give us a call and let us know what we can do for you. Our phone number is (404) 417-2600.

Christopher C. Shaefer

Christopher Shaefer was appointed to the position of Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the Atlanta Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in October 2012. In his current assignment, SAC Shaefer oversees all ATF operations within the State of Georgia.

ATF is a key law enforcement agency within the U. S. Department of Justice that protects our communities from violent criminals, criminal organizations, the illegal use and storage of explosives, trafficking of firearms, acts of arson and bombings, acts of terrorism, and the illegal diversion of alcohol and tobacco products. The men and women of ATF perform the dual responsibilities of enforcing Federal criminal laws and regulating the firearms and explosives industries to protect against crime, violence, and other threats to public safety.

Prior to heading the Atlanta Field Division, SAC Shaefer served as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Los Angeles Field Division from January 2007 until October 2012, and was responsible for the investigative activities of seven area criminal enforcement field offices.

In May 2004, SAC Shaefer was transferred to ATF National Headquarters in Washington, D.C., where he served in the Inspection Division of the Office of Professional Responsibility and Security Operations. While in this assignment, he was responsible for the review and documentation of ATF’s Preparedness and Response to Hurricane Katrina.

SAC Shaefer is a trained tactical crisis negotiator and was assigned to the Bureau’s elite Special Response Team (SRT) for four years. He has been assigned to numerous dignitary protective details to include the President, Vice President, presidential candidates, and foreign heads of State. In 2002, he was detailed to the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, participating in the Olympic Joint Terrorism Task Force.

In April 2000, SAC Shaefer was promoted to Supervisory Special Agent of the San Francisco I Field Office and later, the San Francisco II Field Office. He began his law enforcement career in 1982 as a police officer for the City of Manteca, California. In 1992, he accepted a position with ATF as a special agent and was assigned to the Sacramento I Field Office.

SAC Shaefer is a graduate of the University of San Francisco, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration.
