Circumstances of Death

Prohibition Agent Joseph Owen, accompanied by other agents and local officers, raided a still near Kosciusko, Lake County, MS. During the raid, the officers were fired upon from ambush and a gunfight ensued.  Agent Owen was seriously wounded as were Jeff and Will Atkinson, the still owners. Agent Owen was rushed to the local hospital, but died several weeks later. The Atkinson brothers were arrested and charged with murder.

Background

Agent Owen joined the Prohibition Unit on January 2, 1922, with an annual salary of $1,500.
