Circumstances of Death

Prohibition Agent William Porter and other agents were preparing to participate in a still raid during the early morning hours at Camp Creek, WV.   Immediately prior to the actual raid, a separate party of State prohibition officers came upon the scene, apparently with the same intentions.  Each group of law enforcement officers mistakenly believed the other to be moonshiners and a firefight began.  During the exchange of gunshots, Agent Porter and one State prohibition officer were killed and one State officer wounded.

Background

Agent Porter joined the Prohibition Unit on October 18, 1920, with an annual salary of $1,800.

Personal

Agent Porter was born in West Virginia.  He was survived by his wife, and their son, William.
