Defendant: Darius Ray
NIBIN Impact: Shell casings linked two convenience store robberies to the same pistol, leading Denver Police detectives to closely analyze both case reports for other similarities. A vehicle description from one robbery would later lead to Ray’s identification and arrest. Thanks to NIBIN, Ray was arrested and charged with both robberies.
Defendant pled guilty to:
• Three counts of aggravated robbery – menacing victim with a deadly weapon
Sentence: 24 years in prison
On May 7 and 15, 2015, a man robbed two 7-Elevens in Denver, shooting into the air both times. NIBIN linked casings from both robberies to the same pistol. The NIBIN information led Denver Police detectives in the Robbery Unit to closely analyze the case reports for other similarities, including vehicle descriptions. On June 12, 2015, Denver Police Department stopped a car with a faulty brake light belonging to Darius Ray, and the officers realized it matched the description of the car involved in the May 7 robbery. Denver PD obtained a warrant to search Ray’s home and found a pistol that NIBIN linked to the robberies. Charged with the two robberies—and a third robbery from March 20, 2015—Ray pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated robbery charges, Dec. 11, 2015. On Feb. 4, 2016, the Denver District Court sentenced Ray to a total of 24 years in prison.
