Sheriff Olaleran Mohammed, who at the time resided in Minnesota, purchased a number of firearms, providing false statements to federal firearms licensees. The firearms were later hidden in a vehicle to be exported to Nigeria. They were discovered and seized in Spain. A warrant was issued for Mohammed’s arrest which came a month later in Atlanta, Georgia, upon his return to the U.S. from Nigeria. Mohammed was tried and convicted of smuggling and providing false statements. While on pre-sentence release, Mohammed failed to appear in court, resulting in his fugitive status.
