Madison Man Sentenced to 30 Months for Illegal Possession of a Firearm

MADISON, WIS. -- John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Rashon Howard, 27, Madison, Wis., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman to 30 months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release, for unlawfully possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Howard pleaded guilty to this charge on October 3, 2013.

Howard was arrested on July 2, 2013, at the Elver Park fireworks display because he had an outstanding warrant for failure to pay child support. A search incident to the arrest led to the recovery of a loaded .22 caliber pistol in his waistband.

Howard was previously convicted of felony possession of THC with intent to distribute in 2009. Howard is also prohibited from possessing firearms because he has a misdemeanor battery conviction, which qualifies as a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence under federal law.

The charge against Howard was the result of an investigation conducted by the Madison Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita M. Rumbelow.
