Multi-Convicted Felon Sentenced to 77 Months for Possessing a Firearm on the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation

MADISON, WIS. -- John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Murl L. Grover, Jr., 32, Wauzeka, Wis., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson to 77 months in prison, followed by a three-year term of supervised release, for unlawfully possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Grover pleaded guilty to this charge on August 11, 2014.

On March 8, 2014, the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Police Department responded to a residence after dispatch received a 911 call about a disturbance. When officers arrived at the residence, they could hear people fighting in the residence. They were allowed in and one of the occupants was Grover. One witness told police Grover had a gun.

Grover had outstanding warrants for his arrest and he was placed in custody. Officers recovered a loaded .357 caliber revolver on a bed where Grover had been sitting. Several witnesses said Grover had pointed the gun at them earlier.

Grover has previously been convicted of five felony offenses, two of them for violent offenses. Grover also has an extensive history of misdemeanor convictions for violent offenses and he consistently failed to comply with conditions of state supervision. Judge Peterson observed that Grover has, “demonstrated complete disregard for the law.”

The charge against Grover was the result of an investigation conducted by the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita Rumbelow.
