ATF Headquarters Safe After Chemical Found

WASHINGTON – Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives employees working in the ATF Library at approximately 9:30 a.m. today discovered a small case containing an old alcohol field test kit emitting fumes in an area housing historical artifacts.

As a precautionary measure, employees in the immediate area were evacuated, the ventilation system was shut down and the area was closed off. As an added safety measure, the D.C. Fire and EMS Hazardous Materials Unit was called in to assist and determined the area safe. An environmental firm has removed the substance from the building.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
