Traffic Stop and Search of Residence Yields Machine Guns, Pipe Bombs and Thousands of Rounds of Ammunition

SAN DIEGO — The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), today announced the arrest of a Lake Elsinore man for possessing four unregistered machine guns. During the investigation, agents and officers also recovered 11 other firearms, two pipe bombs and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

The investigation began on May 6, when San Diego Police Officers attempted to pull over Jason Hilliard, 36, for driving erratically in the Pacific Beach area. Hilliard crashed into another vehicle and was taken into custody. ATF was notified after officers discovered, six firearms, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a ski mask, duct tape and large overcoat in the vehicle. ATF agents determined that of the six firearms in the vehicle, four of them had been converted from semi-automatic firearms, into machine guns.

ATF searched Hilliard’s residence located at 15156 Anchor Way, Lake Elsinore, CA. Agents discovered nine additional firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition, a silencer and two pipe bombs. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad responded and rendered the pipe bombs safe.

One can only imagine the death, destruction and mayhem that this one individual could have inflicted with those machineguns and pipe bombs, said John A. Torres, Special Agent in Charge, ATF, Los Angeles Field Division. I am pleased with the professionalism of the San Diego Police Department and Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. As result of their cooperation we were able get these dangerous weapons off of the streets, added Torres.

Hilliard has no known criminal history. No motive for his activity has been uncovered thus far. Hilliard is scheduled to appear in federal court today on charges of possessing an unregistered machine gun. This investigation is ongoing.
