Corwith, Iowa Man Convicted on Firearms Charge

A Hancock County man was convicted by a federal jury on May 9, 2012, after a 3-day trial in federal court in Sioux City.

Jeromy Joseph Ackerman, age 33, from Corwith, Iowa, was convicted of one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The evidence at trial showed that in the early Spring or Summer of 2010, defendant purchased a handgun and some ammunition. On or about June 19, 2010, defendant retrieved the firearm and ammunition from a hiding place in his home, drove into the countryside with other men, and repeatedly fired the weapon. Also on the 19th or early on June 20th defendant caused the weapon to be reloaded at the Loft bar, where defendant inadvertently left a box of ammunition. When the ammunition was discovered in the Loft bar, it was turned over to law enforcement by the bar owners and sparked the criminal investigation that revealed defendant’s crime.

Sentencing before United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Ackerman remains free on bond previously set. Ackerman faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessments, and 3 years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
