Madison Man Sentenced to 33 Months For Illegal Possession of Firearm

MADISON, WISCONSIN – John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Alvin Torry, 32, Madison, was sentenced today
by U.S. District Judge Barbara B. Crabb to 33 months in prison, followed by a three-year period of supervised release, for unlawfully possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Torry pleaded guilty to this charge on January 30, 2012.

On October 2, 2012, at approximately 1:30 a.m. an officer with the Fitchburg Police Department stopped Torry for speeding. Torry was also intoxicated and a search of his vehicle incident to arrest led to the recovery of a loaded 9mm pistol..

This is the second time Torry has been convicted in the Western District of Wisconsin for unlawfully possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. In 2006, Torry was sentenced to 33 months in prison. After serving his prison sentence, in 2010 his supervision was revoked, and he served an additional 11 months in prison. Torry told Judge Crabb that he carries firearms because he has previously been shot at. Today's 33-month sentence was at the high end of the advisory sentencing guidelines range.

The charges against Torry was the result of an investigation conducted by the Fitchburg Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita M. Rumbelow.
