Shaefer Named to Head ATF Atlanta Field Division

ATLANTA GA — Christopher C. Shaefer, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) was recently selected by ATF Acting Director B. Todd Jones to head ATF’s Atlanta Field Division. Prior to being selected as the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the Atlanta Field Division, Shaefer served as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) of the Los Angeles Field Division. He also worked at ATF Headquarters where he oversaw ATF’s transition for the recently delegated Title 21 Administrative Forfeiture authority.

ASAC Shaefer began his ATF career in 1992 as a special agent in the Sacramento Field Office, San Francisco Field Division, later serving as a Supervisory Special Agent. SAC Shaefer was transferred to ATF Headquarters in May 2004, where he served in the Office of Professional Responsibility and Security Operations.

During his ATF career, SAC Shaefer has worked and supervised numerous Federal firearm, explosives and arson investigations. He was the operational On-Scene Commander of one of the largest criminal investigations in ATF history, Operation Black Rain, an October 2008 investigation which targeted members of a violent outlaw motorcycle gang and resulted in the arrest of nearly 100 motorcycle gang members with more than 130 search warrants executed without incident. Shaefer is a trained tactical crisis negotiator and was assigned to ATF’s elite Special Response Team (SRT) for four years.

SAC Shaefer is a graduate of the University of San Francisco, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration with a minor in Criminal Justice.
