CIRCUMSTANCES OF DEATH

Prohibition Agents Cary Freeman and Howard Fisher were executing a search warrant at the home of James Chambers in Norfolk (Titustown), VA.  While the officers were searching the house, Chambers retrieved a hidden gun and killed both agents. Chambers fled, but was later hunted down and killed by a Federal posse.

BACKGROUND

Agent Freeman joined the Prohibition Unit on 6/26/1922, with an annual salary of $1,500.  He had been on the job for only 27 days prior to his death.

PERSONAL

Agent Freeman was born in Dinwiddie County, VA.  He was survived by his wife, Hazel (nee Owen).
