Circumstances of Death

Special Agents Julius Buchter and John Rowley were investigating an illicit moonshine operation in Delaware County, New York. They had been walking in the woods for several hours across rough terrain, searching for evidence of a still. During the search, Agent Buchter suffered a heart attack and died before medical help could arrive.

Background

Agent Buchter joined the Alcohol Tax Unit (ATU) on June 2, 1941. He was assigned to the New York Field Division. Previously, he was a police officer for the Federal Works Agency in Washington, DC. During World War II, he was called to active duty and served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1946.

Agent Buchter was born in New York, New York. He was survived by his wife, Estelle.
