About the Newark Field Division

Welcome to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Newark Field Division. The Newark Field Division was created in 2008 to safeguard New Jersey from firearms and gang-related violence in furtherance of ATF’s mission. Our presence in New Jersey provided a new venue for federal initiatives such as the Violent Crime Impact Team, funding opportunities for National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) laboratories, and supplied the state with more analytical resources through the development of a Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC).

Since our creation in 2008, the Newark Field Division has been committed to reducing violent crime in New Jersey. Our agents combat firearm related violence by focusing their investigative efforts on firearms traffickers, street gangs, armed violent offenders and career criminals. Our Certified Explosives Specialists and Fire Investigators proactively investigate acts violence that violate federal explosive and arson laws. We value our partnerships with other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies throughout New Jersey and are active on several statewide task force initiatives.

ATF Newark’s industry operations investigators (IOIs) work with and inspect federal firearm and explosives licensees statewide to ensure their compliance with applicable regulations pertaining to the safe handling, storage and sale of firearms and explosives. Our IOIs conduct inspections of firearm and explosives storage facilities and provide guidance.

We encourage all residents to get involved and assist us in our goal of reducing crime in our communities. Please give us a call and let us know what we can do for you. Our telephone number is (973) 413-1179.
