Circumstances of Death 

Special Agent Lawrence Edgar Davis and Pilot-Lt. Roy White of the South Carolina National Guard departed in a military plane at 2:15 p.m. from the Spartanburg airport. They planned to conduct aerial surveillance of still activity around Inman, South Carolina. For unknown reasons, at approximately 2:45 p.m., their plane crashed in a field near the Compton Bridge Road just north of Inman. Both Agent Davis and Lt. White were killed instantly.

Background

Agent Davis joined the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax Division (ATTD) on April 28, 1952. He was stationed at offices in Elizabeth City and Wilkesboro, North Carolina, prior to his transfer to Spartanburg, South Carolina. Previously, he was a police officer in Honolulu, Hawaii and Greensboro, North Carolina. Agent Davis proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Personal

Agent Davis was born in Forest City, North Carolina. He was survived by his wife, Helen and their two children, Christopher and Sandra.
