Rockford Man Sentenced on Charges Of Illegal Possession of Firearms

ROCKFORD — A Rockford, Ill., man was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Judge Iain D. Johnston for illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. DONTREL U. BROWN, 24, was sentenced to 48 months in federal prison, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release. Brown pleaded guilty to the charges on June 15, 2021.

According to the written plea agreement, Brown, who had previously been convicted as a felon, possessed a loaded Taurus model PT809 9 mm semi-automatic, with the serial number obliterated, which firearm had traveled in interstate and foreign commerce prior to defendant’s possession of it, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g)(1). Brown was on probation at the time he possessed the firearm.

The sentencing was announced by John R. Lausch, Jr., United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; Kristen deTineo, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives. The investigation was conducted by ATF and the Rockford City Police Department.

The government was represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica S. Maveus.
