Albert J. Gibes
A.J. Gibes is the Special Agent in Charge of the ATF Phoenix Field Division. Since April 2026, he has been responsible for executing ATF’s criminal enforcement and regulatory mission throughout Arizona and New Mexico.
Previously, Mr. Gibes served as an Assistant Special Agent in Charge of ATF’s Louisville Field Division in Louisville, Kentucky. In addition, Mr. Gibes served as the Acting Division Chief of ATF’s Field Management Staff in Washington, D.C., where he oversaw national-level field programs and operations including policy development, resource and budget management and investigative case and risk management.
Mr. Gibes began his career with ATF in 2008 as a special agent in the Tucson Field Office. During that time, he specialized in international firearms trafficking investigations that spanned the globe to include Mexico, Canada, Lebanon, and Hong Kong. He also served as an ATF certified explosives specialist and an investigator assigned to the Pima Regional Bomb Squad.
In 2017, Mr. Gibes was promoted to serve as a program manager with ATF’s Internet Investigations Center located in Washington, D.C. In 2019, he returned to Arizona and served as the Resident Agent in Charge of the Tucson II Field Office until 2022. In 2020, he was selected to represent ATF as a subject matter expert and a strategic planner while assigned to the U.S. Council on Transnational Organized Crime - Strategic Division located in Vienna, Virginia.
Mr. Gibes began his federal career with the Immigration and Naturalization Service and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. In 2003, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Arizona and later earned graduate certificates in Forensic Science and Explosives Technology. Mr. Gibes also completed leadership training at the U.S. Army War College. Throughout his career, he has been the recipient of multiple awards for merit and investigative excellence from local, federal and international law enforcement agencies.
