K-9 Lady is an ATF Explosives Detection Canine assigned to the Houston Field Division with Special Agent Canine Handler (SACH) Jim Osburg. Her job is to find explosives, firearms, spent casings and ammunition. K-9 Lady started her training with the Puppies Behind Bars organization.
For K-9 Lady, explosive detection work runs in the family. ATF recruited Lady, her brothers Darwin and Hank, and sisters Piper and Shiloh at the same time. The siblings also graduated together August 9, 2019.
On July 31, 2020, K-9 Lady and SACH Osburg worked on a shooting case in Houston, Texas where the suspect shot a victim in an apartment complex parking lot. SACH Osburg gave K-9 Lady the command to start searching the crime scene and she located a spent .22 caliber casing in a garden. This find was significant because the .22 caliber is particularly difficult for canines to detect; it is one of the smallest caliber casings and emits very little odor. K-9 Lady’s find helped local detectives with this criminal investigation.
