The Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 requires agencies to publish proposed information collections in the Federal Register for public comment before an agency can use the process (generally a form) to collect information from the public. As required by the Paperwork Reduction Act, this notice provides 60 days for public comment on the revision of a currently approved collection. The proposed information collected requires licensed firearms manufacturers and importers to legibly identify each firearm by engraving, casting, stamping (impressing), or otherwise conspicuously placing an individual serial number on the frame or receiver of a firearm. The required firearms identification information supports Federal, State, and local law enforcement officials in crime fighting by facilitating the tracing of firearms used in criminal activities.
