Fire Research Laboratory Projects

Students testing fire extinguishers

Since its creation in 2003, the ATF Fire Research Laboratory (FRL) has conducted experiments in support of the fire investigation community. These tests have been conducted as part of casework, independent research projects, and research as part of the Certified Fire Investigator (CFI) candidate program. The experiments in this database include a range of tests from single-item fuel packages up to full-scale fire tests in a multi-story structure.

Note: Certain commercial entities, equipment, materials, or services may be identified in this database to describe an experimental procedure or concept adequately. Such identification is not intended to imply recommendation or endorsement by the ATF Fire Research Laboratory, nor discrimination against similar entities, equipment, materials, or services not mentioned.

Title and Research Overview Project Number Number of Tests
Cartridge Casings Exposed to Fire [PDF - 3.2 MB]

One experiment was conducted to expose 48 cartridge casings to a fire in a single room compartment.

Gas Flow and Resulting Flame from Different Size Holes in CSST [PDF - 10.27 MB]

Seventy-five experiments were conducted to determine the flow rate of gas emanating from different size holes in corrugated stainless-steel tubing (CSST) and to determine if the resulting flame was stable or if an obstruction was required near the hole to prevent the flame from blowing off and self-extinguishing.
