ATF seizes over 80 machinegun conversion devices during an arrest
Illegal devices quickly convert firearms from semi-automatic to fully automatic
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on Wednesday made an arrest of an individual suspected of acquiring and distributing machinegun conversion devices, an illegal component that turns semi-automatic firearms into fully automatic weapons. More than 80 machinegun conversion devices were discovered during the arrest.
“The proliferation of machinegun conversion devices is one of the top concerns law enforcement is dealing with right now,” said ATF Special Agent in Charge Alicia Jones. “These devices are illegal to possess, illegal to make, and illegal to sell, and far too often we’re seeing them tied to deadly shootings across the area. Finding these devices when we did and keeping them off our streets is a major win for public safety.”
Machinegun Conversion Devices (MCDs) are defined as machineguns under the National Firearms Act, even when not attached to a firearm. Possessing, making, or distributing these devices can result in up to ten years in prison and/or a fine of up to $250,000.
The arrest and the seizure of the machinegun conversion devices was the result of a proactive investigation and partnership with the Greensboro Police Department. This is an on-going investigation.
