The Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 requires agencies to publish proposed information collections in the Federal Register for public comment before an agency can use the process (generally a form) to collect information from the public. The proposed information collection was previously published in the Federal Register on May 2, 2018. As required by the Paperwork Reduction Act, this notice provides 30 days for public comment on the revision of an existing collection. The proposed information collection pertains to each licensed firearms manufacturer or licensed firearm importer, who must legibly identify each firearm by engraving, casting, stamping (impressing), or otherwise conspicuously placing on the frame or receiver an individual serial number; which will be used to facilitate investigations about the criminal use of firearms.
