Circumstances of Death 

Special Agent James Truett Smith was operating a government issued 1957 Ford pickup truck near Miller City, Arkansas. For unknown reasons, his vehicle struck a bridge abutment and crashed into a creek. Agent Smith was apparently knocked unconscious and later found inside the vehicle. A coroner’s inquest determined that Agent Smith had died from drowning.

Background

Agent Smith joined the Alcohol Tax Unit on March 4, 1951, and served in offices at Gulfport, Mississippi and Marshall, Texas. Previously, he proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1945.

Personal

Agent Smith was born in Stamford, Texas. He was survived by his wife, Ruby and their son, Randy.
