An unknown suspect shot a victim at a gas station in Detroit, Michigan in January 2017.

Police recovered cartridge cases from the crime scene and entered them into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN). NIBIN’s database houses millions of digital images of spent cartridge cases that were either found at crime scenes or test-fired from recovered weapons.

In April 2017, unknown suspects robbed and fatally shot limousine driver Devin Lowe at a Detroit area gas station. Investigators entered the cartridge cases into NIBIN and linked the two shooting scenes.

During this time, ATF teamed up with the Detroit Police Department offering a reward up to $5,000 for information related to the shooting.

With the help of NIBIN and surveillance video footage, Deandre Austin was identified as the shooter in both incidents.

Austin was arrested and sentenced to life in prison April 9, 2018.
