Circumstances of Death

Special Agents William Milton Pugh and James Howes seized a still near Dyersburg, Tennessee. The still operator, Clyde Arwood, was hiding in ambush and shot and killed Agent Pugh using a shotgun. He also attempted to shoot Agent Howes, but missed. Arwood was later arrested, tried, convicted and electrocuted for the murder of Agent Pugh.

Agent Pugh was born in Red Bair, Alabama. He was survived by his wife, along with his father and mother, James and Minerva (née Stamphill) Pugh.
