Our History

ATF's history dates back to 1886 as prohibition agents under the Department of Treasury. At the conclusion of Prohibition, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax Division was developed with the added responsibility of enforcing federal firearms laws. On July 1, 1972, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms was created with its current mission of preventing violent crimes through the enforcement of firearms and explosives laws.
