What do IOIs Do?

  1. Conduct firearm and explosives inspections to ensure compliance with federal laws and regulations.
  2. Determine if application meet legal requirements for obtaining a federal license.
  3. Assist special agents in investigations.
  4. Act as a resource to industry member on compliance issues and industry best practices.

There are more than 139,000 federal firearms licensees and more than 10,440 explosives licensees with more than 620 IOIs in the field to ensure regulatory compliance.

Investigators’ Role: The work of IOIs is regulatory and involves frequent contact with, and interviews of, individuals with different backgrounds all across the country.
